Afternoon with the Authors – The Belfast Jacobin: Samuel Neilson and the Northern Star
Ken Dawson is the author of The Belfast Jacobin: Samuel Neilson and the United Irishmen, published by Irish Academic Press in 2017. Samuel Neilson, a Presbyterian, was a prosperous merchant in a bustling late eighteenth century Belfast. A founder of the Society of United Irishmen, Neilson was a proprietor and editor of the Northern Star, a radical newspaper which promoted an agenda for political change in a time of limited representation. Neilson played a leading role in the development of the United Irishmen’s revolutionary strategy and he was imprisoned in Dublin and Scotland for his activities. He died in exile in the United States in 1803. This illustrated talk will explore Neilson’s often forgotten contribution to the history of Belfast and tells the remarkable story of the Northern Star.
